Facelift: Then and Now
The SMAS-lift is the most commonly performed facelift technique today. In
addition to the skin flap facelift and SMAS technique, the evolution of
modern techniques includes the deep-plane facelift, subperiosteal facelift,
endoscopic facelift and others. Each of these methods has its noted
proponents, but nowhere has it been conclusively shown that any one
technique is superior. Despite the ongoing controversy, there are at least a
couple of points that most plastic surgeons agree on.

ADVANCES IN FACELIFT
PROCEDURES ADD YOUTH AND BEAUTY
Traditionally, facelifts focused on tightening the skin in the neck and jawline.
Recently, significant attention and debate has focused on the central portion of
the face, often called the midface. Four Studies presented.
- Featherlift
More and more women, especially younger patients who do not
have a lot of sagging, are turning to new minimally invasive
lifting procedures that entail smaller incisions and can be
performed using local anesthesia.
- Short Scar
Facelift A short scar face-lift is a limited incision
lift which gives patients the same results as the traditional
procedure. The surgery performed beneath the skin remains
unchanged, but the incision made is about half the length
of that made in a traditional lift.
- The Mid Face
Lift In the past, cosmetic facial surgery has concentrated
on concerns of the forehead and eyelids (the upper third of
the face) with procedures such as browlifts and eyelid lifts.
Jowls and turkey neck of the jaw and neckline (the lower third
of the face) were corrected with facelifts and necklifts.
But until the mid face lift was developed recently, there
had been no technique to adequately address the multi-faceted
changes that occur in the middle of the face, leaving a tired
and aged appearance despite the best efforts to improve one's
look.
- SMAS Facelift This
technique repositions skin and the underlying muscle of the
cheek to more adequately correct jowls and skin laxity which
allows for a less "pulled" look and longer lasting results
than a skin-only facelift.
- Surgically placed 'sling' reduces signs of aging in the neck
A thin, plastic "sling" surgically placed under the skin beneath
the skin and jaws helps reduce the saggy appearance of the neck that results
from aging, according to an article in the November/December issue of The
Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
- 10 Steps to a Successful Facelift Do you look happy? sad? tired? angry?
Today's skilled cosmetic plastic surgeon
knows that getting the best results from any cosmetic operation requires a
customized surgical plan for each patient. Facelift surgery is particularly
challenging, since patients differ widely in their underlying facial
structure as well as the extent of their visible aging.
- Second-time Facelifts as
Safe as Original Procedure, ASPS Study Says
Older Patients' Special Needs Considered for Successful Surgery Facelift recipients have yet another reason to smile
while looking younger thanks to a study finding that a person's second facelift
is as safe as the original procedure.
- Facial Expression
and Eyebrow Position Do you look happy? sad? tired? angry?
Have you ever wondered how you know what another person’s
mood is just by looking at his or her face? Studies have shown
that one instantaneously and subconsciously makes a determination
of another person’s mood just by glancing at the position
and appearance of both the eyebrows and mouth. But what if
only the position of the eyebrows was varied, and not the
mouth?
