BULLHORN SUB-NASAL LIPLIFT REVISITED
by Cosmetic Surgery News

"I receive e-mails from dissatisfied plastic surgery patients on a monthly basis looking for help. Over the last few years, one of the highest rates of dissatisfaction has come from patients who have had a liplift. I have been sent copies of some of the operative reports from desperate patients looking for help. One of the common threads among most of these e-mails are that these patients did not have a simple skin only lip lift, they had the type of liplift that also involved surgery on the orbicularis oris muscle."

CHEMOTHERAPY DRUG MAY IMPROVE APPEARANCE OF AGING SKIN
by UMHS

"The chemotherapy medication fluorouracil appears to reduce potentially precancerous skin patches and improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin, according to a report by U-M associate professor of dermatology Dana L. Sachs, M.D., in the June issue of Archives of Dermatology, one of the Journal of the American Medical Association/Archives journals. The number of lesions was significantly reduced following treatment, from an average of 11.6 lesions to an average of 1.5. Clinical evaluations also identified overall improvements in aging-related damage, including decreases in wrinkling, dark skin spots, hyperpigmentation (skin that has become darker) and sallowness (a yellow skin tone)."

DR. SHERRELL ASTON ADDRESSES THE POPULARITY OF DERMAL FILLERS AND POSSIBLE LONG TERM SIDE EFFECTS
press release

"What to do in a sagging economy? Not necessarily the quick fix that you think, says Dr. Sherrell Aston, one of the country's leading plastic surgeons. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gathered a panel of experts to discuss possible safety concerns regarding the use of dermal fillers. Although the injections have been approved to fill in severe wrinkles around the nasolabial fold (the creases running from the nose to the corners of the mouth), the FDA is concerned that their extensive use in other situations may present new safety issues that should be addressed."

Are Herbal Supplements Putting Aesthetic Surgery Patients At Risk?
"For many people, the words "natural" or "herbal" are virtually synonymous with safety and purity. Products available over-the-counter without a doctor's prescription are often mistakenly believed to be free of significant risks. A report in the March/April issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal warns that more than 40% of plastic surgery patients use herbal supplements in the two weeks prior to undergoing surgery. And, while some herbal supplements may provide benefits during recovery, commonly used herbal medications such as ginkgo biloba, ginseng, garlic, echinacea, valerian root and others can have deleterious effects when combined with surgery."
