More Men Seeking Plastic Surgery to 'Freshen' Their Looks,
Remain Competitive in the Workplace (press release from The Plastic Surgery Group)
CINCINNATI, July 13 -- Throughout the world in homes, health clubs, restaurants and businesses, conversations may progress in many different languages. But the comments are similar: "Every time I look at myself in a picture I am bothered by the hump on my nose, the bags under my eyes and the turkey gobbler under my chin." "I have been working out for months and I just cannot get rid of this excess fatty tissue on my hips and around my waist." You might ask why Mrs. Jones is so concerned about aging. That is where you made your first mistake. It's not Mrs. Jones speaking, but Mr. Jones. Male cosmetic surgery throughout the world has increased significantly in the last decade. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the five top cosmetic surgeries for men are liposuction, eyelid surgery, nose surgery, male breast reduction and hair transplantation. Thirteen percent of all liposuction performed in the United States in 2004 was performed on men. Fifteen percent of eyelid surgery and 24 percent of nasal surgery were also performed on men. More and more men are seeking these procedures because of the emphasis on looking as good as you feel and remaining youthful in the competitive workplace. Men are working later in life and are interested in maintaining a very good outward first impression. Surgical rejuvenation for men has been significantly complemented by non- surgical cosmetic procedures including Botox®, laser hair removal, chemical peels, micro dermabrasion and the use of hyaluronic acid injectables for textural facial rejuvenation. Cosmetic surgery for men is no longer a closet procedure. Mr. and Mrs. Jones are starting to compete for level playing time. Men, if they are considering any of these procedures, should schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon. Make sure the doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and/or the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Dr. Michael Leadbetter is a board certified plastic surgeon with The
Plastic Surgery Group, one of the largest non-academic cosmetic surgery
practices in the nation, providing procedures including liposuction, tummy
tucks, skin care, hair removal, face lifts and breast enhancement. More
