For most "Baby Boomers," the prospect of smoothing fine lines, wrinkles and age spots with laser skin resurfacing has come with a cadre of disadvantages – from moderate to severe pain, lengthy healing times, risk of scarring and high costs. But a new, FDA-approved laser promises to cut down on the drawbacks of traditional lasers, while providing much of the same benefits.

According to Dr. Joshua Fox, M.D., a leading NY-area dermatologist and founding director of Advanced Dermatology and The Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, the new FraxelTM laser is far more effective than non-ablative, pulsed-light and laser treatments, and offers faster less risk and less painful results than ablative (CO2 / Erbium) laser treatments. "Fraxel is offering patients the best of both worlds," Dr. Fox notes. "We are able to provide patients with superior results and fewer side-effects with essentially no downtime."
"Pretty as a Picture"

Fraxel"s technology works on skin in much the same way a computer artist might manipulate a digital photograph. Just as the artist corrects "pixel-by-pixel" in a photograph, the laser works cell-by-cell on the skin. "Fraxel corrects a pattern of cells, called Micro Thermal Zones (MTZ), rather than the entire surface," Dr. Fox explains. "This allows the healthy surrounding cells to promote faster healing to the entire area," he adds. What"s more, Fraxel treatments are applied deeply into the skin, encouraging regeneration at the collagen level. "This is where we see the real benefits of the Fraxel laser treatment, in that it aids in the natural regrowth of healthier, younger-looking skin cells," Dr. Fox says.

Conversely, Dr. Fox explains, ablative lasers are applied to the full surface of the area being treated. While the treatments are effective, they leave the skin raw, bleeding, oozing and crusted and require a lengthy healing time with a significant risk of scarring and/or discoloration. Non-ablative treatments, while gentler, do not penetrate as deep and so their effectiveness is marginal.

Another benefit to Fraxel treatment is its abbreviated treatment regimen. While traditional ablative treatment can take months to achieve maximum results, Fraxel usually takes only three to five treatments with redness lasting usually one to two days. In addition, results are both immediate and progressive; most patients see improvements after the first session, but results continue to build as the collagen regenerates over the course of several weeks.

In addition to shortening the treatment period, Fraxel"s technology also cuts down on the pain, disfigurement and healing time of laser treatments. "The reduction of both short-term and long-term side effects usually associated with an ablative approach is perhaps the most significant factor for patients who choose the Fraxel treatment," Dr. Fox says. "Their quality of life is vastly improved – they can resume their normal activities the next day, and can even apply light makeup to the area immediately after treatment." As one of the first cosmetic surgeons in the New York metro area to offer Fraxel, Dr. Fox notes that the new treatment is also usually less costly than other laser and even non-laser anti-aging options. As improvement is gradual and progressive patients like that the results are very natural looking and unlike many facelifts and other aggressive procedures.

The FDA approved Fraxel, created by a Palo Alto, CA-based research company called Reliant Technologies, late last year for the treatment of age spots, wrinkles, fine lines and discoloration associated with aging. Studies associated with the FDA approval process revealed little or no risk associated with the treatment, with side effects reported as mild, short-term tenderness and redness at the treatment site. Fraxel treatment can be applied to any soft tissue area of the body, but the face, hands, arms and chest are the most popular areas for treatment.
