Erlangen, Germany – April 25, 2005 – WaveLight Laser Technologie AG today announced the company received FDA approval for the BURANE XL Er:YAG laser system. BURANE XL is the fourth aesthetic laser from WaveLight to debut in the U.S. market this year, joining the Sinon Q-switched ruby, Mydon Nd:YAG and the Arion alexandrite lasers. Although new to the U.S., all four laser systems have a dedicated following in Europe and Asia where the WaveLight brand is renowned for German craftsmanship, innovative technology and award-winning ergonomic design.

Pinnacle of Versatility

The key feature of the BURANE XL Er:YAG is a proprietary triple-mode technology that allows the physician to utilize the laser in three settings: ablation mode for classic skin resurfacing, a patented coagulation mode for non-ablative wrinkle/scar treatment and a combination mode for ultimate control in skin treatments.

Clinical Experience Highlights BURANE XL Advantages

Dr. Christine Dierickx of the Laser and Skin Center of Boom, Belgium uses the BURANE XL in her clinic and praises its versatility. "When I do skin resurfacing, I always finish the procedure with one or two passes in the coagulation mode to deposit a little bit of controlled thermal damage," said Dr. Dierickx. "The result of this combination technique mimics the effect of a CO₂ laser."

Dr. Dierickx also utilizes the individual modes of the BURANE XL. "I use the non-ablative coagulation mode of the BURANE XL to treat wrinkles and scars, including acne scars, and the pure ablative mode if you need to shave skin tumors like dermal nevi."

Dr. Dierickx stresses the importance of managing patient expectations with non-ablative wrinkle reduction. "The BURANE XL offers a fairly non-invasive way to induce collagen formation, and it takes time," she said. "In one recent study, patients were treated with the BURANE XL coagulation mode for scars and wrinkle reduction and saw that improvement started at three months after treatment and became obvious between six and twelve months. Patients need to be patient if they want the advantages of the more comfortable non-ablative treatment."

Ease of Handling, Smart Design

The BURANE XL features a wavelength of 2940 nm. In keeping with the system’s versatility, the spot size can be changed quickly and efficiently by inserting the desired spacer directly into the handpiece. The handpiece and spacers are designed to offer a clear, unobstructed view of the treatment zone. A divergent laser beam enhances the system’s safety profile, expanding as the distance increases and decreasing the effect accordingly.

The BURANE XL features a specially-designed and patented pulse sequence for each application (coagulation, scars, wrinkles) that heats the deeper skin layers to a specific temperature while protecting the epidermis by allowing it to cool down during the pauses of the pulse sequences.
