Representing new standards in design and technology Sinon, Mydon and Arion Laser Systems from WaveLight Feature German Engineering, Innovation and Reliability (press release from WaveLight Laser Technologie AG)
New Orleans – February 18, 2005 – WaveLight Laser Technologie AG of Erlangen, Germany will introduce three aesthetic lasers to the U.S. market at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), Booth #1823. The FDA approved lasers — Sinon Q-switched ruby, Mydon Nd:YAG and the Arion alexandrite — have a dedicated following in Europe and Asia where they are renowned for award-winning product design, speed, reliability and versatility. "Although we are relative newcomers to the U.S. market, we arrive with more than eight years of international experience in medical and aesthetic lasers," said Max Reindl, CEO. "Our goal is to continue to establish new technological standards in the laser industry and offer unparalleled support and solutions for our customers." Known internationally as the technological leader in refractive surgery, WaveLight is respected within the global ophthalmic market for its Allegretto Wave excimer laser system (launched in the U.S. in 2003). The aesthetic lasers being launched at the AAD this weekend represent the company’s first expansion into the U.S. aesthetic industry. The company anticipates FDA clearance for marketing of an additional aesthetic laser — the Burane Er:YAG — later this year. Early experience of U.S. physicians who are using WaveLight laser systems indicate the German-crafted lasers represent a new threshold in laser engineering, design and performance. "Although these aesthetic lasers do not bring new wavelengths to the U.S. market, they bring next generation technology with competitive pricing and superior customer commitment," said Mr. Reindl. "We expect to see high demand among physicians looking to expand their practice offerings as well as those who are ready to upgrade their current laser system." Power Performance in Sinon Ruby Laser The Sinon Q-switched ruby laser has a wavelength of 694 nm and is used for removal of tattoos and pigmented skin lesions as well as hair removal in light-skin (Type I and II) patients. "Historically, ruby lasers were expensive, slow and not very reliable," said Eric Bernstein, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania, and a dermatologic surgeon in Bryn Mawr, PA. "The Sinon has solved all these problems; it’s a wonderfully built and well designed laser, high-powered, fast, incredibly reliable and well-priced." With tattoo removal increasing in popularity as a way to enhance practice offerings, the Sinon is expected to generate a great deal of attention among U.S. physicians. "I’m currently treating 20 patients for tattoos that failed to clear with other laser systems and the Sinon is removing them beautifully," said Dr. Bernstein. "The Sinon works on green and blue pigment as well as black – and that’s a tremendous benefit not seen with ruby lasers in the past."
Constant Contact Cooling with Mydon Nd:YAG The Mydon Nd:YAG is a long-pulsed laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm that can be used for removal of leg veins, hemangiomas and telangiectasias, as well as hair removal in darker-skinned individuals and treatment of wrinkles. The combination of large spot diameter and high output enables the Mydon to work up to 40 percent faster than other Nd:YAG systems. Akhil Wadhera, M.D., Chief Resident in dermatology at the University of California, Davis, believes that the innovative cooling system is the most exciting feature of the Mydon, allowing pre-, parallel and post-treatment cooling simultaneously during the laser procedure. "Because of the effective cooling during the delivery of laser pulses, patients report much less discomfort compared to some of the other devices we’ve used in the past," said Dr. Wadhera. "We haven’t seen any blistering or dyspigmentation despite having used the laser at fairly high fluences on all skin types including Types V and VI." According to Dr. Wadhera, the compact and ergonomic design of the Mydon is a major advantage. "Physicians can easily maneuver the Mydon around the patient and from one room to another," he said. "Also, the hand piece has a good reach, the machine does not need frequent calibration and the interface is easy-to-use and operator-friendly." Proprietary Scanner Offers Speed in Arion Alexandrite The Arion long-pulsed alexandrite laser has a wavelength of 755 nm and is designed for removal of hair (Skin Types I-IV) and superficial blood vessels. According to Mitchel Goldman, M.D., Medical Director at Dermatology/Cosmetic Laser Associates of La Jolla, Inc., California, the Arion represents a major advance in alexandrite systems. "The most exciting feature of the Arion is the air-cooled scanning device that can treat large areas rapidly without compromising patient comfort," said Dr. Goldman. "This alexandrite laser is faster and more powerful than other systems. In addition, the machine’s compact ergonomic design is very user-friendly and intuitive. The cold air unit fits into the handpiece, positioning the treated area directly in the path of cold air throughout the scan." WaveLight Sets New Standard All WaveLight lasers are designed against a uniform platform, making it easy for a physician to switch between laser systems. The uniform design also offers advantages in production and maintenance. Dr. Robert Weiss, Assistant Professor of dermatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is extremely pleased with his clinical experience using the Mydon and Sinon lasers. "WaveLight is the Mercedes of laser systems," said Dr. Weiss. "You have consistency of engineering, design and ergonomics in each laser. The design is very high quality and lives up to the tradition of German craftsmanship." WaveLight Laser Technologie AG, listed in Deutsche Börse AG's Prime Standard since January 2003,develops, produces, and markets laser systems in the fields of ophthalmology, aesthetics, urology, and industrial applications. WaveLight’s market success is based on its innovative laser systems that are the technology leaders in their areas of application and its broad-based sales network featuring both own sales channels and strategic partners. The Erlangen-based group was founded in 1996 by its current chief executive, Max Reindl. |
