Scientific Study Shows Scarguard(R) ScarCare(R) Dramatically Increases Enzyme Responsible For Scar Shrinkage (press release from SCARGUARD) Authors -- Michael S. Beckenstein, M.D., F.A.C.S., Terato Kuniaki, MDSc, Ph.D., Alan Matarasso, M.D.Findings Show Mechanism by Which Scarguard, the Patented Formulation Most Used By Plastic Surgeons, Reduces the Appearance of Scars
GREAT NECK, N.Y., Jan. 20 -- For centuries, physicians have struggled to find a way to minimize the appearance of scars. Until recently, scars were only treated after they had become a clinical problem. That practice is changing as plastic surgeons nationwide have been modifying their post-operative care and routinely dispensing the over-the-counter scar treatment, ScarguardŽ ScarCareŽ, in increasing numbers. Scarguard is now the most frequently recommended scar treatment by plastic surgeons(1). The popularity of this product among plastic surgeons prompted an independent study to investigate the mechanism of action of Scarguard. The study, published in the November/December issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, shows that Scarguard ScarCare boosts the production of procollagenase by 344 percent. Procollagenase is the building block for collagenase, the substance created by the body to melt away the excess collagen formed during the wound-healing process. Too much collagen is what creates scars. This study suggests that by stimulating the production of procollagenase, Scarguard ScarCare can effectively minimize the appearance of scars. "The ability of Scarguard to increase collagenase production so dramatically marks a breakthrough in post-operative scar treatment, as well as treatment of existing, mature scars," explained Michael Beckenstein, M.D., one of the principal authors of the study. "This scientific evidence proves this product is effective in scar treatment and prevention. It will make Scarguard the new standard of care for new and old scars." How Scars Are Formed Excessive scarring is caused by a number of factors including location, orientation to skin tension lines, genetics, type and cause of wound and wound tension. Whenever there is a wound, it essentially creates a hole in the collagen on the surface layers of the skin. The body works to heal this by producing collagen to fill in that hole. In the process, it often produces more than is necessary. When the body is in perfect balance, collagenase is produced to melt away the excess collagen and the body heals with little resulting scarring. When this process is out of balance, as is often the case, unsightly scars are left. "After years of practice, I was frustrated by the fact that excessive scarring would sometimes diminish the final outcome of the work I did for my patients. I knew there had to be a way to get better end-results," explained Joel Studin, M.D., F.A.C.S., inventor of Scarguard ScarCare and Chairman and CEO of Red Rock Laboratories, LLC and a plastic and reconstructive surgeon. "I worked to find a user-friendly way to combine five key elements known to improve scarring. That is how Scarguard was born." The five elements that have been shown in extensive studies on the wound healing process to inhibit scar formation are: application of pressure, corticosteroids, occlusion, topical silicone and Vitamin E. Used together, these agents act synergistically to have a greater impact than when applied separately. Scarguard ScarCare combines hydrocortisone, Vitamin E and silicone in a clear liquid that brushes on, dries quickly and forms a nearly invisible protective film over the wound. The flexible film carrier adds occlusion and slight increased surface tension effectively delivering all the treatment modalities shown to get results in one, easy-to-apply product. Here's how it works: Corticosteroids: -- Inhibit the formation of collagen Vitamin E: -- Antioxidant that in several in-vitro studies has been shown to inhibit collagen
synthesis Silicon gel: -- Provides occlusion and hydration to the scar surface Occlusion: -- Helps keep the wound properly hydrated for optimal healing Pressure: -- A slight increase in surface tension may be all that is needed to stimulate collagenase. Because it is nearly invisible, dries quickly and doesn't wash off with water, Scarguard overcomes the compliance issue that has been problematic for other scar treatments currently on the market. In fact, makeup can even be applied over Scarguard once it is dry. "We are excited about the results of this study and are more convinced than ever that the combination of ingredients in Scarguard, coupled with this innovative delivery system, offer the breakthrough in efficacy that gives patients and their doctors the best possible outcome, both after surgery and on old overgrown scars," said Studin. Dr. Joel Studin, in partnership with Red Rock Laboratories, LLC developed Scarguard
ScarCare in 1998 and Scarguard Lightener in 2001 to help improve the final outcome
of surgical procedures and help improve the appearance of existing hypertrophic
and darkened scars. The privately held company has been distributing Scarguard ScarCare
and Scarguard Lightener in partnership with Mentor Corporation through plastic surgeons
since the products first became available and has received overwhelmingly positive
response from both doctors and their patients. Recently, Red Rock Labs has begun
distributing Scarguard ScarCare at retail pharmacies including CVS and Rite Aid.
