ATHERTON, Calif., Oct. 4 -- Steven K. Struck, M.D., a leading expert on facial rejuvenation, today received the first FRAXEL(TM) Laser Treatment (FLT) system in Northern California from Reliant Technologies. Representing a scientific breakthrough in laser skin resurfacing technology, FLT achieves skin improvements that approach those of conventional CO(2) lasers, without the associated side effects or downtime. Dr. Struck -- an early FLT adopter who was instrumental in the laser's preliminary trials and the first to market with a number of additional non-surgical breakthroughs -- is currently treating patients with the FLT system in his Atherton and Los Gatos office locations.

Invented by Reliant scientists in Palo Alto, Calif., the enabling FLT systems are based on a new science of "fractional" skin repair. Similar to digital alteration of photographs and paintings, the clinical effect of this treatment technique is to alter the appearance of aging and sun-damaged skin. By treating a fraction of the skin's surface at a time, FLT provides the positive results and effectiveness of traditional skin resurfacing without the downtime. Unlike traditional CO(2) laser treatments that remove the top layer of skin, the FLT procedure treats the skin fractionally by producing patterns of tiny, microscopic laser hits, or pin points, that are separated by areas of unaffected, healthy tissue. The spared healthy tissue between treatment zones contains viable cells that promote rapid healing of the outer skin layers.
