INAMED Encouraged by National Cancer
Institute Long Term Study of Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants
(press release from Inamed Corporation)
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--Oct. 4, 2004--INAMED Corporation, (NASDAQ:IMDC), is encouraged by results published in the October 1, 2004 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health, found no convincing evidence that silicone gel-filled breast implants have an effect on the development of subsequent connective tissue disorders (CTDs). The researchers used data from one of the largest studies on the long-term health effects of silicone gel-filled breast implants. Scientists at NCI reviewed the medical records of nearly 7,200 women who had cosmetic breast implant surgery before 1989 and were studied in comparison to a cohort of women similar in age who had other types of plastic surgery. "This study is important and encouraging. The results are consistent with the growing body of published scientific evidence in the United States, and internationally, which is supportive of the long-term safety of silicone gel-filled breast implants," said Nick Teti, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Inamed Corporation. The NCI study is one of the most comprehensive retrospective studies to date on the health effects of silicone gel-filled breast implants. The study was conducted in response to a 1992 U.S. Congressional directive to the National Institutes of Health to investigate the long-term safety of these devices. A web-based link to the study is listed below. http://www.cancer.gov at the NCI home page, type "breast implants" INAMED Corporation, a global healthcare company with over 25 years of experience developing, manufacturing, and marketing innovative, high-quality, science-based products, including breast implants for aesthetic augmentation and for reconstructive surgery; a range of dermal products for facial rejuvenation; and a minimally invasive device for obesity intervention, the LAP-BAND System.
