Study Shows Combination Facial Procedure Safely Reduces Signs of Aging (press release from ASDS)
ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., Sept. 21, 2004 – Patients who need both facelifts and laser resurfacing to remove tell-tale signs of aging and sun exposure can have both procedures done at the same time with minimal side effects, according to research published in the current issue of Dermatologic Surgery. According to lead author Tina Alster, MD, a Washington, DC-based dermatologic surgeon, ablative laser skin resurfacing (a procedure developed by dermatologic surgeons over a decade ago) improves, noninvasively, the facial appearance of patients with photoaged skin caused by aging and years of being in the sun. She further explained in the article that patients with more photoaging, as evidenced by excessive loose skin and jowling, usually require surgical lifting to achieve optimal results. In her study, Alster retrospectively analyzed 34 patients who underwent combination laser resurfacing and surgical lifting. She reported that the side effect profile of the combined surgery was similar to what is normal for a laser-only procedure. The most frequent side effect was temporary discoloration in 20 percent of cases, which disappeared after four months in all but one patient. "Clearly, combining laser resurfacing and facelifts in one procedure maximizes aesthetic outcomes without increasing potential side effects," said Alster. "In addition to the excellent outcomes, patients benefit from the convenience of having the combined procedure and consolidation of anesthesia and recovery times." Patients were under intravenous (twilight) anesthesia, which poses less risk than general anesthesia. It is preferable that patients spend as little time as possible under any type of anesthesia, and ASDS continues to urge prospective patients to avoid having multiple procedures at the same time under general anesthesia. ASDS President-Elect Rhoda S. Narins, a dermatologic surgeon based in NY City is enthusiastic about the study’s results. "My patients are very pleased with the results of their laser treatments. Whether the CO2 laser is used in conjunction with a facelift, between facelifts or without a facelift, the laser gets rid of wrinkles and pigmentation and makes the skin smooth, toned, even-colored and younger looking." She stressed the importance of visiting an experienced dermatologic surgeon who is trained in these procedures and understands the post-op skin care that is key to achieving excellent results. Dermatologic Surgery is a medical journal published by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS). With over 4,000 members, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, founded in 1970, is the largest specialty organization in the world exclusively representing dermatologic surgeons – board-certified physicians who are specifically trained to treat the health, function and appearance of the skin and soft tissue with both medically necessary and cosmetic procedures, using both surgical and non-surgical methods.
