Survey:
Cosmetic Doctors Give Poor Ratings To Their TV Peers
(press release from Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.

NEW YORK --
One hundred percent of the physicians in cosmetic practice who responded to
a recent survey agreed there is a growing interest in cosmetic practice on
the part of the public. Clearly, one of the factors stimulating this
interest is the increased media attention to cosmetic surgery and to the
growing number of TV shows that deal with cosmetic care. Castle Connolly
Medical Ltd., the research and information company that publishes America's
Cosmetic Doctors and Dentists and America's Top Doctors, consumer guides,
asked 4,000 doctors in cosmetic practice to rate the impact of "Nip/Tuck,"
"I Want a Famous Face," "Extreme Makeover" and "The Swan" on the public's
perception or, perhaps, misperception of their work.
The show cosmetic doctors rated as having the most positive impact on public
perception was ABC's "Extreme Makeover," which received a 51% positive
rating. FOX's "The Swan" received only a 19% favorable rating from cosmetic
doctors, while 39% considered its impact on the public to be negative.
"These shows have made the public much more aware of cosmetic and aesthetic
procedures," says Ramtin Kassir, MD of St. Joseph's Hospital in Wayne, NJ.
"Our job as physicians is to dispel some myths and establish realistic goals
for patients."
F/X's "Nip/Tuck" and MTV's "I Want a Famous Face" were generally seen in a
very negative light. Physicians gave these shows the most unfavorable
ratings. "Nip/Tuck" received a 54% negative grade. "It's so ridiculous, it
is a parody. But as a parody I like it," said Talmage Raine, MD, a plastic
surgeon affiliated with Hinsdale Hospital in Hinsdale, IL. While 63% of the
physicians have seen "I Want a Famous Face," only 5% of them approved of the
show's message to the public. Doctors expressed their concern that plastic
surgery is "trivialized and demeaned by these shows." "The biggest problem
is that people think that surgery is just a piece of cake," says Barry M.
Zide, MD, a professor of plastic surgery at NYU Medical Center in New York,
NY. "It's not that simple!"
America's Cosmetic Doctors and Dentists is the only guide that profiles
6,000 cosmetic doctors and dentists who are properly trained and qualified
to deliver cosmetic care. Dr. John J. Connolly, Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.
President and CEO, co-author with Wendy Lewis of the Guide and the survey
director is available for interviews. For additional information, please,
