to Promote Stem Cell Banking, American Society of Plastic Surgeons Says
(press release from ASPS - 8/30/04)
The jury
is still out on the benefit of “banking” frozen adult stem cells harvested
from liposuction fat, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons
(ASPS). While this is an exciting
area in medical research, it is still in the extremely experimental phases
of research, according to the ASPS. Treatment of medical problems or
disorders using stem cells obtained through liposuction has yet to be
developed.
“We embrace advances made through medical research and science, but also
want to be precise and realistic in what we tell our patients and the media.
We don’t know the true potential of adult non-embryonic stem cells,” said
Rod Rohrich, MD, president of ASPS. “They may not necessarily have the
ability to turn into a nerve or a heart cell as we know embryonic cells can.
We also don’t know if adult stem cells will be cable to produce ‘normal’
tissue as embryonic stem cells can.”
A number of studies have shown some encouraging preliminary data, according
to the ASPS, however, there are many hurdles to jump through regarding
whether adult stem cells harvested from liposuction fat can be used
successfully.
In a 2003 Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery report, the ASPS Data Committee
cautioned physicians offering stem cell banking to ensure that patients
understand the uncertainties of this technology and give patients a
straightforward evaluation about potential benefits.
Currently there are no medical uses for this type of stem cell harvesting
approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
ASPS is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in
the world and the foremost authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic
surgery. With nearly 5,000 members, ASPS is the definitive voice of the
plastic surgery specialty. Viewed throughout the world as the pinnacle of
information for new techniques, advances and plastic surgery trends, the
society represents 94 percent of all the board-certified plastic surgeons in
the U.S. Ninety-four percent of all ASPS members perform cosmetic plastic
surgery and 89 percent of all ASPS members perform reconstructive plastic
surgery. ASPS, founded in 1931, represents physicians certified by The
American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada.
