HOW SKIN HEALS

The Inflammatory Phase: Begins 4 -12 hours after injury. Responsive cells migrate to the injury site causing swelling, redness, warmth and sometimes tenderness.

The Proliferative Phase: Connective tissue cells called fibroblasts proliferate and position themselves for collagen synthesis to stimulate wound repair. Vitamins, particularly Vitamin C, are integral to this process.

The Maturation Phase: Fibroblasts and capillaries regress and collagen fibers shift closer together further strengthening damaged skin tissue. This phase can last from days to several weeks or longer.
