Following a pregnancy or multiple pregnancies, the female breast undergoes involution and loses much of its fullness. Many women who have had beautiful breasts become very distraught after pregnancy, because there breasts sag and become noticeably flattened, due to loss of volume. Very often a simple breast augmentation can replace the lost volume and restore the breast to their prior shape. However, there are many women whose breasts have sagged so much that the only solution would be a breast uplift procedure. A combination of a breast augmentation and a breast up-lift is another alternative. The techniques for lifting the breast and restoring a natural fullness, in the past, have involved excessive scarring in the natural breast fold. An improvement in this procedure pioneered by Dr. Stanley Taub can eliminate in many instances the excessive scarring in the lower fold of the breast. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 56,8222 breast uplifts were performed last year. This is up 3% from 2001 and up 8% from 2000.

Lollipop Breast Up-lift Procedure

Dr. Stanley Taub is a Manhattan plastic surgeon who has refined a breast up lift technique that produces natural looking shape with less scarring. It’s called Vertical Breast Up Lift, or the “Lollipop technique.” The lollipop name refers to the shape of the scar after the surgery. Dr. Taub makes a circular incision around the areola and then extends the cut downwards in a V-shape toward the lower fold of the breast. Earlier techniques required a horizontal incision in the breast fold, but with the lollipop technique this horizontal incision is eliminated. Next, Dr. Taub sculpts the existing breast tissue with internal sutures, raising the breast and molding it into a more attractive shape. When this is completed excess skin is removed to conform to the new breast shape. Dr. Taub further minimizes scarring by using sutures under the skin to close the incision. Thereby, eliminating suture marks. These sutures also prevent the scars from spreading. With this type of innovative procedure patients can achieve the size and shape breast they want, with a minimum of scarring.

Lollipop breast up-lift is technically easier to perform than the standard breast up-lift. However, it requires an experienced surgeon to plan the amount of loose excess skin to be removed, so that the vertical scar ends in a smooth contour at the infra-memory fold without any bulges or dogears. Prior to Dr. Taub’s technique, the tale of the vertical scar in many patients was left unfinished, resulting in unsightly scars. To allow for a proper tapering of the scar, it may become necessary in larger breasts to extend the vertical incision beyond the infra-memory fold or to curve the incision so that the tale end lies within the fold of the breast for a short distance. In any case, it is far more preferable to have a smooth, healed scar in the area of the infra-memory fold, even if the incision extends beyond the fold. To ensure minimal scarring, Dr. Taub utilizes a hidden subcuticular removable subture to minimize scarring. The procedure takes about two hours and is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Many women are back to work within three to four days, where final results can be achieved within a month. For women who have extremely large breasts, the lollipop technique can be useful for reducing the breast volume, as well as lifting the breast. In some instances, this can be covered by insurance, providing there is a medical need.
