Press release from Dr. Frederic Brandt (April 16, 2003)
NEW YORK, (April 16)-- Famed dermatologist, Dr. Fredric Brandt, is
always at the forefront of dermatological advances. As the number one user of botox and collagen in the world, Dr. Brandt is the authority on non-invasive
cosmetic treatments. His renowned expertise in this field has earned Dr. Brandt
a position as a clinical research investigator and spokesperson for Collagen
Corporation (INAMED), and Allergan (creators of Botox) and a spot on the
advisory board of Q-Med (makers of Restylane). Now, the producers of the next
generation of injectables have turned to Dr. Brandt to be one of the first to
test the newest injectables slated to hit the US market. Dr. Brandt conducted
initial clinical trials with Cosmoderm, Cosmoplast and Restylane and thoroughly
investigated all preliminary data associated with Artecoll and Radiance. Here,
Dr. Brandt explains the differences, benefits, and risks, and gives insider
information on these latest filler injectables.
COSMODERM AND COSMOPLAST
Manufactured by INAMED, Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast are revolutionary filler
materials that just received FDA approval on March 12, 2003. Cosmoderm is a thin
material that is used for finer lines and Cosmoplast, which contains
glutaraldehyde for more viscosity, is thicker and is used for deeper lines.
These materials are the only collagen dermofillers that are derived in a lab,
which eliminates the possibility of a viral or bacterial disease transmission.
"The major advantage of Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast is that, unlike regular
collagen, patients are not required to be skin tested prior to injection," says
Dr. Brandt. "Because these filler forms are all-natural, human-derived products,
patients cannot develop a reaction or allergy to them and don't have to undergo
a waiting period to determine how their skin will react," he explains.
RESTYLANE
Restylane, a product of Q-Med and distributed by Medicis, is made of hyaluronic
acid, a sugar-based gel, which is naturally present in the skin and joints of
all living organisms. As a natural element, this means that the material
eliminates the potential for any allergic reaction and poses no risk for
transmission of disease. The gel is used to diminish deep as well as, fine lines
and wrinkles and to enhance the lip area by working with the body's own
hyaluronic acid to create volume much like natural fat tissue does.
According to Dr. Brandt, "The clinical study's results indicate that Restylane's
line diminishing capabilities are superior to other injectables on the market
such as Zyplast collagen. Of the patients that participated in the trial, more
than half had a better remaining effect from the treatment with Restylane than
with the compared products; additionally Restylane is longer lasting than
collagen." The most widely used injectable filling product in Europe and Canada,
Restylane is due for FDA approval in the United States very shortly.
ARTECOLL
Manufactured by Artes Medical, Inc., Artecoll(R) is an injectable micro-implant
used for the persistent correction of facial wrinkles, lines, and furrows. Since
its introduction in 1994, Artecoll has been used in over 200,000 patients
outside the United States, including Europe, South America, Mexico and Canada,
and is soon to get FDA approval in the United States. The Artecoll implant
consists of 75% bovine collagen solution and 25% polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)
microspheres (synthetic bubbles), which make the material round, smooth and
airy.
Artecoll injections contain microspheres that work to stimulate the natural
development of human collagen. The body's newly produced collagen is then formed
around the injected microspheres. The plumping effect, which takes approximately
3-6 months, is achieved through the combination of the natural collagen that is
now mixed in with the plumping microspheres. "The major benefit of the material
is that it is long-lasting," says Dr. Brandt. "However, because the PMMA
microspheres are permanent in the skin once injected, any negative reactions or
lumpiness that might occur will also be permanent." Additionally, some delayed
reactions to Artecoll have also been reported.
RADIANCE
Manufactured by BioForm, Inc., Radiance is a long-lasting soft tissue filler
that lasts up to 3 to 5 years and is currently FDA approved to treat human vocal
cord paralysis only. Radiance consists of calcium hydroxiapatite (CaHA), a
primary component of teeth and bones. It is supplied in an injectable form and
remains soft, pliable and non-calcified. There have been no reported side
effects or allergic reactions and it does not require skin testing. Once
injected into the tissue, Radiance takes on the characteristic of the
surrounding tissue: hard when on bone and soft when in fat.
The advantage of this product over other types of fillers, such as collagen, is
that it requires no skin testing and can last significantly longer. And while
its positive effects last up to five years, so do its negative effects, which
often include asymmetry of the skin or lumpiness. According to Dr. Brandt, "More
research and clinical studies should be conducted on this material in the United
States to reach a comfort level where it can be widely used."
