Toronto, ON – January 13, 2003 -- A Toronto surgeon is experiencing tremendous success with a new face lift procedure that eliminates scarring behind the ear. Dr. Frank Beninger, cosmetic plastic surgeon, is one of a handful of Canadian surgeons performing the short scar face-lift. "It is the same lift with less incision," says Dr. Beninger. A short scar face-lift is a limited incision lift which gives patients the same results as the traditional procedure. The surgery performed beneath the skin remains unchanged, but the incision made is about half the length of that made in a traditional lift. By reducing scarring while maintaining optimal results, Dr. Beninger's patients need not worry about the scarring in the hairline behind the ear which is associated with the traditional procedure. "The hairline scarring (of a traditional lift) often remains red the longest and is usually the last scar to fade and disappear," says Dr. Beninger. Since the incision made in a short scar face-lift stops behind the ear, scarring behind the ear is eliminated. Dr. Beninger finds the short scar face-lift an ideal procedure for patients who often wear their hair pulled back. "A lot of patients who have had traditional face-lifts complain about the scarring behind the ear," he says. "It can be difficult to hide." The short scar face-lift eliminates this inconvenient tell-tale sign, while still giving patients an excellent result. The operation involves less dissection and is less invasive, resulting in less pain and shorter healing time. Dr. Beninger also repositions fat pads in the cheek for an upward lift. Like any surgical procedure, the short scar face-lift is not for everyone. "Patients with moderate skin laxity in the neck are ideal candidates for the procedure," says Dr. Beninger. "An incision behind the ear may not be necessary to improve the neck definition." However, the versatility of the lift allows the surgeon to extend the incision during the procedure if required, turning the surgery into a traditional face lift. "You want to create the optimal outcome which may mean a longer incision mark," says Dr. Beninger. "My patients generally tell me that if I can do the lift with less scarring, perfect, but to go ahead and do the traditional lift if necessary. The procedure is customized for each patient," says Beninger. Unique to the short scar process is an improved lift and redefinition. "The lift is much more vertical and helps to redefine the mid-face and cheek bones," explains Dr. Beninger. Dr. Beninger began practicing the short scar face lift last year, and he says that about 25 per cent of the lifts he now performs are short scar. "The procedure has been very successful," he says. "The advantage of this type of short scar lifting in selected patients is that the results are just as good, but with half of the amount incisions or scarring, and you've eliminated the whole problem of interfering with the hairline." Dr. Beninger became interested in this procedure after training and working with renowned cosmetic reconstruction surgeon Dr. Daniel Baker in New York City. Dr. Baker is a forerunner in the development of the short scar face- lift. Dr. Baker recently changed his practice so that the majority of the surgeries he performs are short scar face-lifts, and he is rumored to have worked on the famous faces of Meg Ryan and Sophia Loren. Dr. Beninger was impressed with Dr. Baker's success with the procedure and decided to begin practicing it in his hometown of Toronto soon thereafter. Dr. Frank Beninger is a member of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgery, and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He has hospital privileges at Toronto Western Hospital. He is also a lecturer of cosmetic plastic and reconstruction surgery at the University of Toronto, and is actively involved in the training of plastic surgery residents. Dr. Beninger performs cosmetic plastic surgery at his state-of-the-art cosmetic clinic in mid-town Toronto.
