SCHAUMBURG, IL (April 10, 2002) -- The latest clinical findings by dermatologic surgeons reveal new aesthetic uses for two well-known biochemicals originally developed for chronic medical conditions: cutaneous growth factors and hormone replacement cream. The pair of topical therapies was shown to actually reverse the skin's aging process by stimulating new collagen growth and epidermal thickening. While studies for both skin treatments are ongoing, early results presented at the recent annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology point to innovative solutions to the age-old complaint of wrinkles and sun-damaged skin. Wound
Care to Complexion Care - Cutaneous Growth Factors "A sunburn is really an acute radiation injury to the skin," said Dr. Fitzpatrick. "After the redness is gone, the wound remains. And, like chronic wounds associated with disease or a severe burn, the entire face is just too big to heal it self. Because the collagen in the dermis is thinner, you see the wrinkles, lines and folds that weren't apparent before." In a multi-center, double blind study of 20 subjects, patients exhibited diminished wrinkles and improved skin smoothness after applying the growth factor solution to facial skin twice daily for three months. Biopsies showed 36.8% more collagen and 10.5% increased thickening of the dermis. Control skin sites receiving a placebo treatment demonstrated 3.6% more collagen and a 2.4% decrease in dermis thickness. Preliminary long-term results indicate that even three months after the end of a course of treatment, patients continue to show an improvement of up to 63.9% increase in collagen. "This is the first topical I've seen that gives such dramatic and clinically verifiable results of smoother and younger skin," reported Dr. Fitzpatrick. "What's most exciting is that topical growth factors appear to actually reverse so-called 'permanent' sun damage without skin irritation or sensitivity associated with other anti-aging topical drugs. It also shows promise in accelerating skin healing following surgical procedures such as laser resurfacing or chemical peeling." Hormone
Replacement Therapy For The Face - Conjugated Estrogens In her talk entitled "Topical Hormones and Skin Rejuvenation," Dr. Ellen Gendler, a dermatologic surgeon in New York City, presented preliminary findings from her use of this same estrogen cream on the faces of several female patients. "Most of my patients react at first by saying, 'You want me to put what, where?'" admitted Dr. Gendler. "But really, the hormone cream is designed to promote collagen growth and that's one of the most effective ways to reduce wrinkles." Dr. Gendler instructed her patients to apply the hormone cream sparingly three times a week. After one month, all patients showed signs of smoother, more refined skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles. Dr. Gendler stated that further study needs to be conducted regarding the efficacy and effects of long-term topical hormone treatment, but the early results are very encouraging. ### The American Society
