Advances in Facelift procedures

"This study describes what I am calling the third generation of facelifts," said Victoria Vitale-Lewis, MD, author and section chief of plastic surgery, Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, Fla.. "In the first generation, plastic surgeons pulled and tightened the skin on the face to erase the signs of aging. In the second generation, plastic surgeons sought to add youthfulness to patients by adding fullness to the face. What I have done in this study is look at 140 women where the goal was not only to reduce aging, but to improve attractiveness."

According to Dr. Vitale-Lewis, she developed a procedure where she tried achieve a more feminine look by making the face more heart-shaped, raising the cheekbones and the corner of the eyes and elevating the outer edge of the eyebrow.

"I heard from so many of my patients that they not only wanted to look younger, but they wanted to look more attractive," said Dr. Vitale-Lewis. "So I investigated the science of beauty in psychology literature to discover what is traditionally defined as pretty or beautiful and implemented these changes to achieve a more feminine look. It's another dimension surgeons can explore to bring greater satisfaction to patients."
